Energy Ministry Awards GNL Quintero its Gold Seal of Energy Efficiency

• The company’s Energy Management System allows it to reduce energy consumption at its Terminal and has a positive impact on its carbon footprint.

Santiago, November 28, 2017.-

GNL Quintero has received the Chilean Energy Ministry’s 2017 Seal of Energy Efficiency (SEE) in the top Gold category.

This recognition is awarded to those leading companies in different sectors of the economy who show strong commitment to energy efficiency, achieving an organizational culture that fosters good use of energy resources.

The company previously held the Seal in the Silver category and its progress to Gold reflects the consolidation of its Energy Efficiency Plan. The GNL Quintero Terminal - with its important level of electricity consumption - developed an Energy Management System, certified under ISO 50001, and an Energy Efficiency Plan under which it has implemented a series of measures in different items of equipment and systems. They include improvements to process control systems (SCADA) in order to be able to monitor and manage power consumption in the plant’s main equipment; a change in the logic of operation of the seawater pumps; and the launch of an electricity self-generation system, comprising 132 solar panels, to supply the Terminal’s Canteen Building and Visitors’ Center, which also received LEED Gold environmental certification in 2017. These measures form part of the company’s Sustainability Plan, which establishes undertakings and targets for each of these areas, aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Thanks to these and other measures, the company was able to reduce its electricity consumption by 6.4% in 2016, equivalent to a saving of 3,925 MWh, with a direct impact on its carbon footprint.

GNL Quintero’s Sustainability Manager, Alfonso Salinas, indicated that “the Energy Efficiency Seal is an important incentive to continue with our work as regards excellence and sustainability. Our efforts in this field have allowed us to achieve an important reduction in electricity consumption, which makes us more competitive in the market and also allows us to reduce our GHG emissions.”

During 2017, GNL Quintero has received a number of different recognitions for sustainability and energy efficiency. As well as the LEED Gold certification for the sustainable construction of its Canteen Building and Visitors’ Center, they include its 7th place in the PROhumana Foundation’s Sustainability Ranking and its selection as a finalist for the 2017 Recyclapolis National Environment Prize.
