GNL QUINTERO EMPLOYEES AND THEIR FAMILIES REMODEL QUINTERO’S EL FARO SCHOOL
• The initiative was undertaken as part of GNL Quintero’s corporate volunteer program in which both the company’s own employees and those of its contractors participate.
Quintero, November 5, 2016.-
The El Faro School in the Quintero municipal district was chosen by GNL Quintero’s employees for their traditional corporate volunteer activity through which they devote a day to implementing a project that benefits the community.
El Faro is a small school for children with special needs, attended by over 100 pupils. Its infrastructure was in very poor shape, partly because of a fire last year in which part of the school burned down. Its yard was unpaved, its electrical installations did not comply with regulatory requirements and the bathrooms were in poor condition. In response, the over 200 volunteers, including contractors’ and GNL Quintero employees and their families, completely remodeled the front of the school and its entrance, installed paving and plant boxes in the yard and an artificial grass sports pitch and repaired bathrooms, classrooms and other parts of the infrastructure.
Each year, GNL Quintero employees, including its senior managers, contractors and collaborators have participated enthusiastically in this activity to support the community. However, this year was particularly special because they decided to incorporate their families, resulting in a real day of family solidarity that also included recreational activities for the children.
Alfonso Salinas, GNL Quintero’s Sustainability Manager, said that “this is a beautiful opportunity to collaborate with those around us, the community that hosts us and, particularly, those most in need. It is moving to see how it is possible to change infrastructure that is in very modest conditions, improving it through everyone’s efforts and seeing an immediate impact. It really is a moment when we become one big family.”
The activity requires months of preparation during which employees organize themselves, look around the area and select a project through which they can make a concrete contribution. This year, their choice was the El Faro School where, together with its head teacher, they identified the improvements to be made. They then designed the project and began preparatory work with the active voluntary participation of contractor companies, employees and their families. Finally, in a very busy day on Saturday, November 5, all the improvements were finished and a completely remodeled school was presented to its staff, the pupils and their families.
In previous years, improvements have been made to the Lourdes School in Quintero, the Juan José Tortel School in Valle Alegre, the Ann Sullivan Special School, the Lidia Iratchet crèche and nursery school and the Delicias del Mar Restaurant in the Loncura fishing village.volver subir
